Three fields, three limits
- Title: up to 100 characters. The checker warns when it is over, and when it is over about 70 characters, because longer titles may be cut off in search and suggestions.
- Description: up to 5,000 characters. The tool shows what appears above the “…more” link, which is about the first 150 characters.
- Tags: up to 500 characters in total. YouTube counts the commas, and counts tags that contain spaces slightly longer, and the meter follows the same way of counting.
The tool also counts the words, hashtags and links in your description, and warns about duplicate tags.
Writing a good video title
- Put the main keyword or the hook near the start, in the part that stays visible.
- Be specific and honest. A title that matches the video keeps viewers watching.
- Aim for about 60 to 70 characters so that the whole title shows on most screens.
- Use numbers or brackets, such as “(Step by Step)”, sparingly to add clarity.
Description and tags
- Front-load the description. Put the key information and any links before the “…more” cutoff.
- Use a few relevant hashtags. A video that has more than 60 hashtags has all of them ignored.
- Keep tags focused on the topic and the way people phrase it, and skip repeats. Tags matter less than the title, description and the video itself.
Tools for the rest of the job
Use the Title Case button to capitalize a title quickly, and the Title Case Converter for specific style guides. Write hashtags with the Hashtag Generator, and check a longer description with the Word Counter.

What is the YouTube title limit?
The title can be up to 100 characters. This tool follows that limit, and flags titles longer than about 70 characters as likely to be shortened in some places.

They play a small role. A clear title, description and thumbnail matter more, and tags are mainly useful for common misspellings and alternate names.
