Pick what you are writing

Use the buttons at the top to switch the limit that is checked:

  • Caption: 2,200 characters.
  • Bio: 150 characters.
  • Username: 30 characters, using only letters, numbers, periods and underscores. The tool warns you if you use anything else.

These are the limits the tool uses. Platforms change them from time to time, so check the app if a post will not publish.

What you see for captions

  • A hashtag meter against the maximum of 30 hashtags, with the list of the hashtags it found.
  • A warning when you use the same hashtag twice.
  • The part of your caption that shows before the “…more” link, which is about the first 125 characters. Put your hook there.
  • Counts for characters, remaining characters, words, hashtags, mentions and emojis.

Writing better captions

  • Open with the most important sentence, because most people see only the first line or two.
  • Use line breaks to space out paragraphs. The Instagram Line Break Generator keeps your blank lines when you paste.
  • Use a handful of relevant hashtags instead of filling all 30. The Hashtag Generator can suggest some.
  • Draft in a notes app or here, then paste, so that a long caption is not lost if the app closes.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Instagram caption limit?

Captions can be up to 2,200 characters, but only the first line or two show before “more”, so lead with the key message.

How many hashtags can I use on Instagram?

Instagram allows up to 30 hashtags per post. This counter warns you when you go over.

Do emojis count as one character?

The counter treats each visible symbol as one character. Instagram’s own counting may differ for some emoji, so leave a little room near the limit.

Why do I see a duplicate hashtag warning?

The same hashtag appears more than once in your caption. Remove the repeat, since it adds nothing and takes up characters.
