What the checker measures

Google does not cut titles at a fixed number of characters. It cuts them by pixel width, which is why this tool shows both. Type your title and the checker reports the characters and the width in pixels, with a bar for each, a plain-language verdict, and a preview of how the result may look in search.

  • Desktop width limit: about 580 pixels for the title.
  • Character guide: roughly 50 to 60 characters, though wide letters such as “W” and “M” use up more room.
  • Verdicts: Good length, Short (under about 30 characters, so consider adding descriptive keywords) or Too long, likely truncated.

Preview and keyword checks

  • Switch between Desktop and Mobile previews to see the title and its address as a visitor would.
  • Enter the page URL to show it as a breadcrumb in the preview.
  • Add a target keyword to check whether it appears in the title, in the first half of the title, in the description and in the URL. The keyword is shown in bold in the preview.
  • Use the copy buttons to take the title, the description or ready-made HTML tags.

Writing a good title tag

  • Put the main keyword near the start and keep the title unique on every page.
  • Describe the page honestly. A clear title gets more clicks than a clever one.
  • Keep the brand name short and place it at the end, or leave it off long titles.
  • Avoid stuffing several keywords into one title.
  • Google can still rewrite a title it considers poor, so write one that matches the page.

Frequently asked questions

What does the keyword check do?

Enter your target keyword to check whether it appears in the title, near the start of the title, in the description and in the URL. Google often bolds matching words in the snippet, which the preview shows too.

How long should a title tag be?

Google truncates titles by pixel width, not characters — roughly 580–600 pixels on desktop, which is usually 50–60 characters. Put important words first.

Will Google always show my title?

No. Google may rewrite titles it thinks don’t describe the page well. Clear, accurate, unique titles are most likely to be shown as written.

Why does Google show a different title from mine?

Google sometimes rewrites titles that are too long, empty, repeated across pages or not a good match for the page. A concise, accurate title is the best protection.

Does the pixel width really matter?

Yes. Search results have a fixed width, so a title with wide letters is cut earlier than one with narrow letters. That is why the pixel bar is the more reliable guide.
