How glitch text works

Glitch text, also known as Zalgo text, is ordinary text with many “combining” Unicode marks stacked on each letter. The marks sit above, through and below the letter and pile up to create a distorted look. Because they are real Unicode characters, you can copy the result and paste it into most apps.

Settings

  • Intensity: Light, Medium, Heavy or Insane. The higher the setting, the more marks are added to each letter.
  • Above, Through and Below: choose where the marks appear. Turn some off for a cleaner or more targeted effect.
  • Regenerate: creates a new random version of the same text.
  • Spaces are left untouched, so the words stay separate.

Because the marks are chosen at random, every run looks different. The count below the result shows the length in code units, which is higher than the number of letters.

Where to use it

  • Spooky or glitchy names, captions and Halloween posts.
  • Creepy effects in games, chats and Discord servers.
  • Short bits of decoration, not long messages.

Things to be aware of

  • Heavy glitch text can spill over into the lines above and below, or be cut off, depending on the app.
  • Some sites strip combining marks or reject text with too many. Try a lower intensity.
  • Screen readers handle it badly, and it is hard to read, so keep important information in plain text.
  • For tidier decoration, use the Fancy Text Generator instead.

Frequently asked questions

How does glitch text work?

It adds Unicode combining marks — accents and symbols designed to attach to the previous letter — many times over, so they pile up above and below the text.

Why is glitch text sometimes blocked?

Heavy Zalgo text can overlap other content, so some apps limit or strip combining marks. Use a lower intensity if it gets removed.

Is it safe to paste glitch text?

It is only text, so it cannot harm your device. Some apps and websites may display it oddly or limit how many combining marks they accept.

Can I turn glitch text back into normal text?

Keep your original text. The combining marks can be removed by some tools, but it is simpler to retype the plain version.
