How the conversion works

Computers store text as numbers. This tool turns each byte of your text, using the UTF-8 encoding, into binary, hexadecimal, octal or decimal. For example, the letter โ€œHโ€ is byte 72, which is 01001000 in binary and 48 in hex. Plain English letters take one byte each, and accented letters and emoji take two to four bytes, so they produce several codes.

Text to code

  • Format: Binary (8 digits per byte), Hexadecimal (2 digits), Octal (3 digits) or Decimal.
  • Separator: a space, nothing, a comma or a new line between bytes.
  • Uppercase hex (on by default): shows hex digits as A to F instead of a to f.

Code to text

Switch to Code โ†’ Text and paste your codes in the format chosen. Codes can be separated by spaces, commas or semicolons, hex values may start with 0x, and a long unbroken string is split into groups of the right size. Each code must be a single byte from 0 to 255. If something is not valid, the tool tells you which codes it could not read. If the bytes do not form valid UTF-8 text, it shows the characters for each byte.

Where it is used

  • Learning how text, ASCII and Unicode are stored.
  • Puzzles, escape rooms and coding challenges that hide messages in binary.
  • Debugging encoding problems by looking at the actual bytes.
  • Preparing hex or decimal byte values for programming and electronics projects.

Frequently asked questions

How is text converted to binary?

Each character is encoded as UTF-8 bytes, and each byte is written as eight binary digits (bits). English letters use one byte; accented letters and emojis use two to four.

What separators can I decode?

Codes separated by spaces, commas or new lines all work. Unseparated binary is read in groups of eight bits.

Why does an emoji produce several binary codes?

In UTF-8, emoji use up to four bytes. Each byte is shown as its own code, so a single emoji can give four groups of eight digits.

Is this the same as ASCII?

For basic English letters and symbols, yes. UTF-8 matches ASCII for those and extends it with extra bytes for other characters.
