What keyword density is
Keyword density is how often a word or phrase appears compared with the total number of words. If “cold brew” appears 6 times in a 300-word article, its density is 6 × 2 ÷ 300, or 4%. The checker lists your most frequent words and phrases so you can see what your text is really about.
Using the checker
- Keyword length: switch between single words, two-word phrases and three-word phrases. Phrases are listed once they appear at least twice.
- Hide stop words (on by default): hides common words like “the”, “and” and “of”, so the useful terms stand out. Numbers on their own are skipped as well.
- Target keyword: type the word or phrase you want to rank for. The tool counts it and shows the density with a verdict: Not found, Looks natural, or Possibly overused above 4%.
- The table lists up to 30 results with the count and the density of each. Use Download CSV to take the data into a spreadsheet.
- The totals show the number of words and the number of unique words.
Is there an ideal density?
There is no magic number, and search engines do not rank pages by hitting a percentage. A few percent for a main phrase is typical for natural writing. Much more than that usually means you are repeating yourself. Write for people first, and use the checker to spot overuse, missing topics and awkward repetition.
How to use the results
- If your main term is missing, work it into the title, an early paragraph and a heading, where it fits naturally.
- If one word dominates, replace some uses with synonyms or related terms.
- Check the two- and three-word lists. Repeated phrases show the real topics of the page.
- Compare your page with a competitor’s by pasting each text in turn.
- Check the length of your title and description with the Meta Title Checker and the Meta Description Checker.
Frequently asked questions
Can I check one specific keyword?
Yes. Type it into “Target keyword” to see exactly how often it appears and its density. You can also download the full keyword table as a CSV file.
What is keyword density?
Keyword density is how often a word or phrase appears compared to the total number of words, shown as a percentage.
What is the ideal keyword density?
There is no official ideal. Google recommends writing naturally for people. If one phrase dominates your text, it may read as repetitive or spammy.
What are stop words?
Stop words are very common words like “the”, “is” and “of” that carry little meaning on their own. Hiding them makes the meaningful keywords easier to see.
How is the target keyword density calculated?
The number of times the keyword appears, multiplied by the number of words in the keyword, divided by the total word count. A two-word phrase used 5 times in 250 words is 4%.
Does it count words in headings and menus?
It counts whatever you paste. Paste only the main content if you want the density of the article itself, without navigation and footers.
