How the estimate is calculated

The calculator starts with a typical number of words for one single-spaced page at 12 pt with one-inch margins, then adjusts for your choices. The starting values are about 500 words for Times New Roman, 470 for Arial, 520 for Calibri, 450 for Georgia, 400 for Verdana and 380 for Courier New. A smaller or larger font size and wider line spacing change the result: double spacing roughly halves the words per page.

Two ways to use it

  • Words to pages: type a word count, or paste your text, and read the number of pages. If you paste text, the tool counts it and ignores the number box.
  • Pages to words: enter a number of pages to see roughly how many words fit with your font, size and spacing.

The results also show the words per page for your settings and the number of handwritten pages, based on about 250 words per page.

Common examples

  • A 1,000-word essay is about 4 pages in Times New Roman 12 pt double-spaced, and about 2 pages single-spaced.
  • A 5-page paper at 12 pt double-spaced is roughly 1,250 words.
  • Reports and dissertations often state page limits, and this helps you plan how much to write.

Why your count may differ

  • Headings, tables, images, block quotes and extra paragraph spacing take up room that words do not.
  • Margins other than one inch change the page capacity.
  • Different fonts of the same nominal size can look larger or smaller.
  • For an exact page count, check in your word processor. Use this tool to plan.
  • To count the words in your text first, use the Word Counter, and to find out how long it takes to read, use the Reading Time Calculator.
