Why text has unwanted line breaks
Text copied from PDFs, scanned documents, emails and some web pages keeps a hard line break at the end of every visual line. When you paste it elsewhere, sentences are chopped into pieces and the text does not reflow. This tool joins the lines back into proper paragraphs in one click.
The options explained
- Keep paragraph breaks: treats blank lines as paragraph separators and keeps them, while joining the lines inside each paragraph. Turn it off to produce a single block of text.
- Join words hyphenated at line ends: PDFs often split a word across two lines with a hyphen. When this is on, “informa-” followed by “tion” on the next line becomes “information”. Ordinary hyphenated words such as “well-known” are left alone.
- Replace line breaks with: a space (the default), nothing, a comma and space, or any custom text.
Handy ways to use it
- Clean copied PDF text before pasting it into a document or an email.
- Turn a column of items into a comma-separated list by choosing “Comma + space”.
- Join lines with nothing to rebuild a long string, such as a token or a wrapped URL.
- Prepare text for a form or a tool that does not accept multiple lines.
After you remove the line breaks
Copied text often also contains doubled spaces, so run the result through the Remove Extra Spaces if it looks uneven. To clean up stray symbols, try the Remove Special Characters, and to drop repeated lines use the Remove Duplicate Lines. Both Windows and Mac or Linux line endings are handled automatically.
Troubleshooting
- Paragraphs ran together: make sure “Keep paragraph breaks” is ticked. The tool recognises a paragraph by the blank line between paragraphs, so if your source has only single line breaks between them it cannot tell where one ends.
- A list or a poem got joined into one line: lists and poetry rely on line breaks. Remove the line breaks only from the paragraphs that need it, or untick the option for the part you want to keep.
- Words are stuck together: you chose “Nothing” as the replacement. Choose “A space” unless you are rebuilding something that has no spaces, such as a long code or URL.
- Double spaces appear in the result: the source text had spaces at the ends of lines. Run the result through the Remove Extra Spaces.
Frequently asked questions
Why does text from PDFs have line breaks?
PDFs store each visual line separately, so copying text keeps a hard break at the end of every line instead of flowing paragraphs.
What does “keep paragraph breaks” do?
It treats blank lines as paragraph separators and keeps them, while joining the lines inside each paragraph.
How do I turn a list into one line?
Paste the list, untick “Keep paragraph breaks”, and choose “Comma + space” (or any custom separator) under “Replace line breaks with”.
Will it change my words or punctuation?
No. It only changes line breaks, plus the optional joining of words split by a hyphen at the end of a line.
