What counts as an emoji

The tool removes complete emoji, not just the base picture. That includes skin-tone variants such as 👏🏽, flags such as 🇺🇸, keycap emoji and combined emoji such as the family 👨‍👩‍👧, which are several emoji joined together. A summary says how many were removed.

Options

  • Also remove symbols (✓ ★ © ™ ♥): off by default. Turn it on to remove text-style symbols and dingbats that are not full-colour emoji. Leave it off if you want to keep marks such as ©.
  • Tidy up extra spaces (on by default): collapses the double spaces that removal leaves behind, trims the lines and removes spaces that end up before punctuation.

Good uses

  • Cleaning social media comments and posts before text analysis.
  • Preparing text for systems, fonts or printers that cannot show emoji.
  • Making a plain-text version of a message or an email subject.
  • Cleaning survey responses, chat logs and product reviews.

Tips

  • Compare the result with the original if meaning depends on the emoji, such as “thanks 👍”.
  • For other unwanted characters, use the Remove Special Characters.
  • To add emoji or styled characters instead, see the Fancy Text Generator.
  • Count the new length with the Word Counter if you have a limit to meet.
